Digital
Agenda for Session 1
Manaiakalani

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
  • Origins is from Samoa (Hawaii) Looking at Manaiakalani as a tool to help and enhance your teaching.
  • It can be used on multiple devices e.g. Iphone, laptop, IPads etc - Namely it is a pencil.
  • Aim is to ENGAGE, ENGAGE, ENGAGE
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
  • Has helped me to streamline planning and filing documents/folders for future use
  • Rather than use Team Drive - use 'My Drive', put in folders and use the search engine to locate documents
  • Understanding of Google Groups - love the choice of 'send daily summaries' at a specific time
  • Understanding different terminology when using Google Docs
  • Using the Explore tool - the fact that it is a legal tool, hence great search engine for children to use.
  • Resources, documents and planning potentially easier to find and to use later without endless searching or redoing.
  • Very easy to share to make it more collaborative between our Junior Syndicate.
  • The Scavenger Hunt activity was a good example of exploring google docs.
  • Looking through other peoples' blogs, google doc creations, learn create share examples with links was good to get different ideas.
What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
  • Voice to text
  • Incorporating it in Reading groups - such as voice to text to check fluency and how a particular child is reading,
  • ESOL children matching words with pictures
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
  • The new skills taught, will definitely help me become more efficient in planning.
  • This will on-flow to allow more family and partaking in activities that I enjoy such as gym, cycling etc.

  1. Kia ora Helen,
It was so nice meeting you and getting to learn about you and your learners.
The idea of the pencil vs. the book is a fantastic way to explain the why of what we are doing within the Manaiakalani Programme.
I look forward to hearing how much you managed to get into place over the week,
    -Kelsey
